POUGHKEEPSIE – Six days into her first term, City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers has declared a “snow emergency” in advance of the impending snowstorm. The declaration goes into effect at 3:00 PM today (Saturday), January 6, 2024.
Vehicles parked on snow emergency routes during a declared emergency are subject to ticketing, towing, or impounding at the vehicle owner’s expense. If your vehicle is towed, the tow fee must be paid prior to the vehicle being released. Instructions for release can be obtained by calling the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department at (845) 451-4000, which also can be used for all non-emergency phone calls. Residents are advised to call 911 in case of emergency.
Residents may park their vehicles in City of Poughkeepsie municipal parking lots that will be open to the public, free of charge, during the declared emergency.
The mayor is asking residents and businesses to keep fire hydrants in front of their homes and shops clear and accessible in case of emergency. Clearing the snow around the hydrant and shoveling a path to it from the street will give the Poughkeepsie Fire Department the vital access it needs in emergencies. City officials point out that under the city codes, there is a responsibility of the owner/lessee of property fronting a hydrant to maintain the area clear around the hydrant. The snow should be removed from a three-foot area around the entire hydrant. Failure to clear and keep clear a hydrant may result in a $100 fine or more.
