POUGHKEEPSIE – The Poughkeepsie City School District’s plan to reconfigure the elementary schools in the district will continue into the 2024-25 school year, according to Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser. Gregory Mott, assistant superintendent of elementary education, is spearheading the exploration of the plan and says “great strides have been made in determining the feasibility of the reconfiguration plan, with more important work to be finalized.”
The current proposal would change the following schools:
- S.F.B. Morse Elementary School enrollment and instruction, currently first through fifth grade would change to PreK through second grade for both English and dual language students.
- Krieger Elementary would change from first through fifth grade instruction to PreK through second grade.
- Smith School would change from PreK and Kindergarten for English-speaking students and Dual language students enrolled in PreK through first grade to one for instruction of students in grades three through five.
- Warring School would convert from its current enrollment of first through fifth grades to one for grades three through five, including dual language students.
- Clinton School would go from educating students in the first through fifth grades to just students in grades three, four, and five.
- Columbus School would transform from the district office building to one for students enrolled in grades three through five.
The district says the reconfiguration plans for elementary schools are so the district can strengthen its impact on the learning of its earliest learners. To earn public support for the plan, the district has launched a website to explain the logic behind the plan. Additionally, an online survey has been released asking parents, caregivers, staff, community stakeholders, and organizations to provide additional information to help inform the final recommendation that will be made to the board of education. The survey can be found here.
