MAHOPAC – First responders throughout Putnam County and the outlying areas are mourning the loss of a retired Putnam 911 dispatcher who also served his Mahopac community as a member of the fire department. Sixty-four-year-old Edward J. Scott passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
Scott joined the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department on February 2, 1978, and was immediately immersed in the fire service. He was initially assigned to Engine Company 1 and later transferred to Engine Company 2 on Buckshollow Road when it was established.
Ed served on more committees than can be mentioned and was a friend to countless fire departments that he visited, not only in the Hudson Valley but on Long Island and upstate New York as well, according to those who knew him.
Ed Scott became a life member of Mahopac VFD in 1998. Rising through the ranks, he became chief of department in 2000 and 2001, later becoming president in 2004, and served on the Board of Fire Commissioners from 2010-2019 and as its chair from 2017-2019. In the 109-year history of the Mahopac Fire Department, Scott was one of three members to hold all three top positions; chief, president, and chairman.
Ed retired this past June from the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services as a dispatcher; Dispatcher 410.
Longtime friend Robert Matragano said, “Ed’s passing is a loss that will be felt for years to come. He was a legend in the emergency services community and his heart was as big as his smile.” Matragano added that he always felt a sense of relief while working ambulance shifts when Dispatcher 410 was on the other end of the radio.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13 from 4-8 p.m. at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home at 692 US-6 in Mahopac. Firematic Services will commence at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 14 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel Church in Lake Carmel.
