Roosevelt FD helps families escape

HYDE PARK – Members of the Roosevelt Fire Department Station 2 helped several families escape their houses Saturday.  It was a planned evacuation that gave dozens of children and their families a chance to enjoy a day of fishing at Greenvale Park.

Members of Roosevelt Station 2 traveled up the hill from their Cream Street firehouse for the derby, which has taken place for approximately 10 years, according to Roosevelt Fire District Chief Jeff Scala.  “Our members are very community-oriented and we hold events like this to give families a chance to get out and enjoy free fishing and food,” he said, adding “We all enjoy seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids as they reel in a fish, many of them doing it for the first time.”

New York State Environmental Conservation Officer Kevin Wamsley was on hand to assist the anglers and answer questions about his duties as an officer.  He also had several animal pelts displayed that were a big attraction for the kids.  A coyote pelt garnered much attention, with kids wanting to know more about the animal that is commonly sighted in Hyde Park.
