Sheriff Arteta critical of state criminal justice reform process

CHESTER – Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta is critical of the state process in designing and updating criminal justice reforms.

The sheriff said the most important people were not even consulted before the reforms were approved.

“I don’t disagree with all of the reforms that came out of Albany, but the reforms that are making our public more unsafe are the ones we are arguing for. We are arguing for them to change it. They didn’t allow law enforcement to partake in any of the conversation prior to them coming out with any of the reforms,” he said.

Law enforcement is opposed to the requirement that they produce criminal documentation within a very abbreviated time frame and that certain crimes are exempt from bail.
