YONKERS – City police have made an arrest in the murder of 76-year-old Jose Raul Velasco, who was killed on August 29, 2023, while in his home on Scarsdale Road in Yonkers. The victim’s son, August Velasco, was arrested on the felony charge of murder just hours after police had responded to the victim’s home at 4:30 p.m.
On August 29, Yonkers police officers responded to a report of an unconscious male. Upon arrival, officers discovered the elder Velasco who was deceased with multiple severe lacerations. During the initial response and investigation by patrol officers on the scene, the younger Velasco, age 47, was identified as the suspect and he was apprehended.
Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to investigate this incident. This investigation shows that Velasco attacked his father with a cleaver in the home, striking him numerous times and causing his death. The weapon was recovered by detectives at the scene.
“It is a sad and tragic incident when an individual takes the life of another, a sentiment which is only amplified when there is a family relation connecting them,” said Yonkers Police Department Commissioner Christopher Sapienza.“I applaud our Police Officers and Detectives for their quick response and thoroughness throughout this investigation.”
The accused murderer was held pending arraignment that was scheduled for Thursday.
