ALBANY – Acting New York State Police Superintendent Steven Nigrelli submitted his resignation on Friday after Governor Hochul informed him that he was no longer being considered for a permanent appointment to the position. Sources close to the most recent state trooper shakeup told Mid-Hudson News that Hochul recently learned that Nigrelli had previously been investigated for sexual harassment during his 32 years as a member of the New York State Police.
Nigrelli had been named to the acting position after former Governor Cuomo’s appointment, Kevin Bruen, resigned last year, during an investigation into his special treatment of MaryEllen Tedesco, the former human resources director for the state police.
Nigrelli, in an attempt to secure the permanent appointment, had recently changed his voter registration and indicated he was now enrolled as a Democrat. The enrollment change occurred before he learned that he was out of consideration by Hochul.
On Friday, Nigrelli sent a memo to all state troopers, saying in part “After being informed by Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration that I am no longer being considered for nomination to be superintendent, I immediately made the difficult decision that I have already been contemplating for the past year. While the decision to retire is not easy, primarily because I truly love being a trooper, it is my time to step aside and let the next generation lead this great agency.” The resignation is effective October 6, 2023.
Sources have told Mid-Hudson News that New York State Police Colonel Dominick Chiumento, who is currently the Acting Field Commander for the department is being considered for the position. Another source has said that Lieutenant Colonel Richard Mazzone is also a candidate for the position. Mazzone is a Hudson Valley resident and spent time at Troop F, headquartered in Middletown.
