LIBERTY – A student who was not from Liberty was stabbed off campus at the end of the school day on Thursday, Liberty Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Sullivan said. The condition of the student was not immediately known.
The incident, which did involve students from Liberty, remains under police investigation.
Sullivan said the safety of students and staff is taken very seriously. He said all of the school buildings are equipped with cameras, accessible by Liberty Police, and a school resource officer is stationed at each building during school hours as well as at after-hours events on the campuses.
All of the buildings require keycard access and guest access is only through a single point of entry, the superintendent said. Regular drills are also held to practice safety procedures.
“We investigate all reports of potential threats to our school community,” Sullivan said. “We encourage everyone to be proactive in safety with the adage, ‘see something, say something’ and report immediate concerns to a trusted adult, administration or law enforcement.”
He said students are also “encouraged to lean on their school counseling department if they are in crisis, have concerns over their safety or just need to talk.” Counselors are available to talk to anyone who wishes to speak with them following this incident, he said.
“Out of an abundance of caution and to help our faculty and students feel safer, there will be an increased police presence on the middle school/high school campus (Friday),” Sullivan said.
