LIBERTY- The Children’s Home, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Binghamton, has established a new residential program in Sullivan County called The Liberty House. A ribbon cutting was held at the home on Tuesday, which is an old church rectory located on Main Street in the Village of Liberty, that has been converted to serve as short-term housing for youth.
George Dermody, President & CEO of The Children’s Home explained why this new home is essential to the community.
“One of the things that became clear was that we needed a place, short term, for children that needed a place to rest, to recover, t0 settle in, and feel safe while the adults in their life were figuring out the next steps for them. We needed Liberty House,” said Dermody.
The Sullivan County Health & Human Services Commissioner John Liddle welcomed the new facility.
“It is a wonderful day, and for all of the work that has been building here over time, 45 employees, reinvesting in this Liberty Village and in this town, and keeping kids in Sullivan close to their home, close to their families, close to their kin, it is tremendously important for taking care of these kids,” said Liddle.
Dermody spoke passionately about The Children Home’s mission.
“Liberty House is our commitment and our roots not to be some organization in Binghamton, or some human services group that moves around, but our willingness and desire to respond to your invitation to be party of Sullivan County,” said Dermody.
