Total eclipse will bring celestial show to parts of New York

NEW YORK- An upcoming total eclipse of the sun which will take place on April 8, 2024, is already attracting additional visitors to some of the stateโ€™s parks, which is expected to host thousands of celestial observers for the event.ย  ย

To accommodate the demand, the parks department is accepting early bird reservations at seven state parks, including one that will be in the path of a total solar eclipse in 2024.ย  Local businesses including hotels are also seeing an influx of room reservations for the evening surrounding the event.ย

The parks that have facilities open for booking include Fair Haven Beach State Park, Allegany, Letchworth, Evangola, Four Mile Creek, Golden Hill and Wellesley Island.ย  The sites can be reserved for a minimum two-night stay.

The total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024, when the moon passes between Earth and the sun.ย  The path of totality will stretch from Texas to the Northeast, including upstate New York.ย

State tourism officials expect that the eclipse will attract travelersย  to upstate New York, in large part because the next opportunity to view the rare natural phenomenon wonโ€™t be until August 2024 within the contiguous United States.ย  Most of the state parks that will have campsites, cabins or cottages available for the eclipse typically do not open for camping until May.ย

โ€œNext year, New Yorkers and visitors alike will have the opportunity to witness an extraordinary, celestial show in our state as the solar eclipse passes over the heart of western New York, the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks in 2024,โ€ said Governor Kathy Houchul.ย  โ€œOur state parks will open campground accommodations early, prior to the traditional camping season, to ensure people can see this amazing display in one of New Yorkโ€™s beautiful natural settings.โ€ย
