Two lawmakers call for protections against anti-Semitism following Hamas attacks

MID-HUDSON – Congressman Pat Ryan (D, NY-18) and State Senator Rob Rolison have called for increased security measures to combat anti-Semitism in the Hudson Valley following the brutal Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7.

Their demands are independent of one another.

Ryan requested “significant additional funding” for security at places of worship, religious schools, and community centers.

He also demanded that the Department of Homeland Security and FBI heighten their coordination with other federal agencies and local officials in response to the increased risk for anti-Semitic violence as well as provide a current threat assessment of the risk landscape.

Meanwhile, Rolison called on Governor Hochul’s administration to “expedite the release of security funding” available to Jewish cultural institutions and nonprofit organizations in the wake of the Hamas attacks.

Rolison said the governor announced the release of $25 million through the state Division of Criminal Justice Services to security improvements, but organizations seeking security upgrades would not be able to apply until December.

He would like to see the timeline adjusted to allow for applications immediately.
