Ulster sheriff investigates fatal hit and run accident involving college student

On Wednesday, January 24 at around 1:15 p.m. deputies responded to Route 208 between the area of Hawk Drive and Cross Creek Road for the report of a dead person found on the side of the road.

When deputies arrived, they located the victim about 20 feet from the road in a wooded area. He was identified as Raymond Rattray, 22, of New York City.

Through investigation it was determined that on January 23 at about 5:10 p.m., he was walking home from class on Route 208 on the shoulder of the south bound lane and was struck by a dark colored sedan traveling south.

The vehicle fled the scene, but sustained damage to the front-end on the passenger side.

The Ulster County Sheriffโ€™s Office is being assisted with this investigation by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, State Police BCI, the Ulster County District Attorneyโ€™s Office, SUNY New Paltz Police and the Town of New Paltz Police Department.
