Widespread vandalism stalls school buses

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – An incident of mass vandalism has caused several school busses to sit idle Thursday morning, leaving dozens of children without transportation to school.

The vandalism at the First Student bus depot on Fitchett Way in the Town of Poughkeepsie was discovered early Thursday morning.

Several busses were disabled as a result. The Town of Poughkeepsie police are investigating the incident.

The Poughkeepsie City School District contracts with First Student to transport many district children. The district transportation office was notified at approximately 5:30 a.m. that no busses would be available.

A parent told Mid-Hudson News that she called the transportation office at 7:15 a.m. to ask about bus and was told that no transportation would be available today.

The parent asked why there had been no parent notification and the transportation employee intimated that their supervisors had been made aware of the problem and a notification was forthcoming.

The district finally issued an advisory at 8:09 a.m.  which is after the time students are supposed to be at school.

The notification mentioned the vandalism and said an update would be provided before the end of the school day.
