Winter storm blankets region with heavy snow

MID-HUDSON- A winter storm has blanketed the entire Mid-Hudson region with snow totals ranging from just a few inches to over a foot in places.ย  Many municipalities have declared snow emergencies restricting on-street parking and limiting travel to essential personnel only so that highway crews can begin the process of storm cleanup.

A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 5 p.m. on Sunday for much of the region.ย  According to the weather service, most of the snow arrived on Saturday night, however, additional snow throughout the day on Sunday is expected to add to final totals.

Municipalities and agencies around the region had been preparing for days for the snowfall, including the state Department of Transportation.ย  Governor Kathy Hochul spoke to the stateโ€™s preparations immediately prior to the start of the snowfall.

โ€œPlows are ready, we have personnel deployed, we have our emergency operations center stood up โ€“ weโ€™ve been doing this since Wednesday in anticipation,โ€ said Hochul.ย  โ€œSo a lot of it from our end is getting the salt ready, the generators, we need warming centers, if utility crews are necessary, we have 5,000 ready to go.โ€

As of early Sunday morning, there were no reports of widespread power outages as a result of the storm.
