Senator Peter Oberacker, representing R/C-Schenevus, has taken a stand in advocating for pension reform for public employees in New York State. Along with fellow members of the New York State Senate Republican Conference, Senator Oberacker pushed for a proposed amendment aimed at addressing the issues within Tier 6 of the state’s pension system. The proposed reform was met with resistance as Senate Democrats rejected the amendment in a party-line vote.
Highlighting the importance of the public workforce, Senator Oberacker emphasized, “Communities, especially in the rural areas I represent, depend greatly on our public workforce.” He further stressed the need for reforming or eliminating Tier 6, stating that it would not only provide an economic boost but also serve as a gesture of appreciation towards those dedicating themselves to the betterment of the state.
The pressing need for reform stems from the State Comptroller’s Office report, which revealed approximately 11,000 vacancies in the state’s workforce by the end of 2023. The situation has been exacerbated by the administration’s decision to fill some vacancies with non-US citizens, amidst a surge of retirements expected within the next five years across various public sector roles.
Senator Oberacker expressed concerns about the implications of the current system on workforce retention, stating, “New York State continues to lose people to outmigration for a host of reasons.
