A film by Emma French of Potsdam, currently a junior at Boston University, was recently awarded “Best Documentary Short” in the 9th Annual Snowtown Film Festival in Watertown, NY. Emma graduated from Potsdam High School in 2020.
The short film profiles Bob Jones, a decoy carver in Cranberry Lake, NY, previously of Waddington.
The film was one of over 400 entries of which eight received awards. The movie, which was made in association with the Adirondack Explorer, can be seen on their YouTube site at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZunZXa6zAU.
A Film & Television Major in the College of Communications at Boston University, the opportunity to film Bob arose through her father’s association with Adirondack Explorer. Tom French had written an article about Bob, and someone suggested Emma make a movie as well.
Bob Jones has been carving decoys since the early 1950s. Currently, his shop is in Cranberry Lake under the name, Wooden Fish Hatchery. In addition to numerous ducks and birds, Bob also creates several varieties of fish decoys.
