OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg Elks Lodge #772 held a recognition dinner to honor firemen, law enforcement and a 50-year member of the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Among those honored were three Ogdensburg firefighters who put themselves in danger to save a life during the fire at Riverview Towers that displaced dozens of people last year.
“On March 8 2022 our department was dispatched to an alarm activation at 232 Washington Street, Riverview Towers while enroute radio transmissions indicated this was a confirmed fire.,” OFD Fire Chief Ken Stull said at the banquet held recently.
“Upon arriving on scene Captain Irvine along with Firefighters Robinson and Strader “Packed Up” and entered the building with our high-rise fire gear. The three made their way up five flights of stairs to the floor below the fire under moderate smoke conditions, and connected to a water source. After securing water, the three made their way to the fire floor. Once on fire floor they were faced with high heat and zero visibility as the smoke was banked down to the floor.”
Stull said that they came across an an unconscious victim in the hallway.
“Captain Irvine and Firefighter Strader immediately switch from suppression efforts and began rescuing and removing of the victim They removed the victim from the fire floor and to medical care. While they were rescuing the victim firefighter Robinson remained alone on the fire floor and attempted to extinguish the fire and most importantly kept the fire from spreading throughout the building,” he said.
