Juneteenth celebrated in Potsdam with free meal, music, speeches

POTSDAM — A free catered meal, dancing, music, and a history presentation were featured at the fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration in Potsdam June 17.

Hundreds of people in St. Lawrence County and beyond attended the family-friendly event to celebrate the culture of African-Americans and provides a space for Black voices to be honored.

The community raised funds to offer a free heritage-rich meal catered by Big Spoon Kitchen. The meal was a highlight of the event, with its long buffet line.

Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth recognizes the day the last American enslaved people learned they were finally from bondage in Texas, in 1865.

In attendance was Jennifer Baxtron, organizer of both the Black Lives Matter movement and Juneteenth in Potsdam.
