CANTON — An animal sanctuary has set up shop in Canton recently and founder Jeffrey Beri has plans to make it even larger.
Beri spoke to county legislators during the April 17 Services Committee meeting, outlining his extensive plans for the project.
“We fight for global animal welfare laws and we fight against animal cruelty,” Beri told legislators.
The sanctuary, known as No Dogs Left Behind, was founded in 2016 as an international 501(c)3 non-profit designed to save dogs around the world.
Beri told legislators he and his organization have done extensive work in East Asia, rescuing dogs from the dog meat markets.
Other work has also been conducted in Afghanistan, where Beri and his staff rescued dozens of war dogs that were left behind when U.S. forces left the country.
Some of the dogs rescued from Afghanistan now reside at the facilities in Canton, Beri said.
In a recent endeavor, Beri told legislators that his organization has worked with the Ukrainian government on vaccination campaigns to help stop the spread of infectious diseases.
“Our emergency responses are global, the conditions don’t matter and location doesn’t matter,” Beri said.
Beri said he and his staff have the experience to execute any plan to save dogs from horrid conditions internationally.
While No Dogs Left Behind focuses heavily on international rescues, Beri said the organization will do much more than just that in the coming months.
Youth education is an important part of the mission, Beri said.
“Educating has been a huge, successful endeavor for us,” he said.
Beri said he and his organization have also pushed for legislation to protect animals and will continue to educate the public about what can be done to rescue more dogs.
Ultimately, adoption is the primary goal for many of the dogs rescued, Beri said.
“We recognize there is a high euthanasia rate here, so we are going to work with local shelters as well,”…
