Colgate-Palmolive is recalling 4.9 million bottles of its Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner for potential of infection from bacteria.
The cleaning product, used to clean most residential hard surfaces and sold in various sizes and scents, was sold from December 2022 to January 2023 for $1-$11 at Amazon.com and other online sites. Affected products were also sold at Dollar General, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and other major U.S. retailers nationwide, according to recall posted by Consumer Product Safety Commission.
About 56,000 bottles were sold in Canada also, the agency said.
During manufacturing, a preservative was not added to the affected products, which led to a risk of bacteria growth, Colgate-Palmolive said in a notice on its Fabuloso website.
The recalled products have the potential to contain Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, bacteria found widely in soil and water.
The bacteria – it can be inhaled, or entered through the eyes or a break in the skin – can pose risk of serious infection in particular to those with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions, CPSC and the company said.

People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria, the company said. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled products, the CPSC said.
Not included in the recall, per the company, are Fabuloso Antibacterial products (all scents), Fabuloso 2X Citrus & Fruits with Baking Soda, Orange with Baking Soda or Tropical Spring and the Fabuloso Original Apple with Vinegar. Also, no product purchased before December 16, 2022 is affected.
