Lansing man arrested in Candor, charged in death of Joseph West Jr.

A Tompkins County man who was wanted as a person of interest in the death of an Ithaca resident has been taken into custody in Tioga County and faces a murder charge.

Last week, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office announced they were looking for Larry R. Walrad, Jr., 52, of Lansing, in connection with the March 4 death of 71-year-old Joseph West, Jr.

Following an investigation by the sheriff’s office, a Tompkins County grand jury handed up a sealed indictment charging Walrad with second-degree murder.

Investigators made several unsuccessful attempts to contact Walrad, and believed he had become aware of the indictment and was in hiding. A sheriff’s office callout asked members of the public to contact authorities if they had any information regarding Walrad’s whereabouts.

Late Thursday evening, the Tompkins County Sheriffโ€™s Office received a tip that Walrad had been seen on Main Street in Candor, and investigators contacted the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, deputies from the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office responded to another tip and took Walrad into custody in Candor without incident. He was transported back to Tompkins County by state troopers.

Walrad was arraigned in Tompkins County Court on the murder charge and sent to the Tompkins County jail without bail by Judge John C. Rowley. No futher details have been released regarding West’s death.

The Ithaca Police Department, Cornell University Police Department, Tompkins County Medical Examiner’s Office and Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
