NY all-state softball 2023 includes 2 Section 4 players of the year

A pair of Section 4 softball aces who pitched their teams to state championships have been recognized as Players of the Year as part of the 2023 all-state team, as selected by the New York State Sports Writers and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.

Maine-Endwell senior Olivia Lewis shared Class A Player of the Year honors with Erin Nuwer of Nardin, a Catholic High School Athletic Association team. Lewis threw a one-hitter in a 4-0 victory over Troy in the Class A state final to cap Maine-Endwell’s 24-2 season.

Lewis batted .481 with 10 homers this season and posted a 20-1 pitching record with more than 200 strikeouts.

Kaitlynย Macumber was chosen Class D Player of the Year. She struck out 18 and held Scio/Friendship scoreless over the final seven innings in Deposit-Hancock’s 5-3, 13-inning triumph in the Class D state championship game, giving the Eagles back-to-back titles.

Macumber, who also played first base, batted .511 with six homers and 34 RBIs. On the mound, she went 11-1 with a 0.39 ERA.

Windsor’s Bill Waldron was named Co-Coach of the Year in Class B after leading the Black Knights to the state semifinals.

The all-state selection committee was headed by chairman Perry Novak, with picks based on nominations from across the state.

10 from Section 4 first-team all-state

In addition to Lewis and Macumber, eight other Section 4 players earned first-team all-state honors among the 33 selections from the section across five classes.

Vestal junior shortstop Caitlyn Petteys was a first-team Class A choice.

Class B first-team picks included Chenango Valley senior pitcher Maddi Trisket and Windsor junior shortstop Anna Finn.

Thomas A. Edison junior pitcher Gabby Milazzo was a first-team Class C all-state selection along with Elmira Notre Dame senior catcher Lawson Bigelow and Greene senior pitcher/shortstop Payton Yahner.

Two other Deposit-Hancock players were first-teamers: sophomore pitcher/first baseman Addison Makowski and sophomore catcher Amanda Ray.
