President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the Hudson Valley on Wednesday.
Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks at SUNY’s Westchester Community College in Valhalla in the 1 p.m. hour on Wednesday.
Biden is expected to talk about increasing the debt limit to avoid default “immediately and without conditions,” according to a White House advisory. Calling a GOP-approved debt limit plan the “House Republican Default on America Act,” the advisory said the president will talk about how it “will cut veterans’ health care visits, teachers and school support staffs, and Meals on Wheels for seniors.”
Biden last came to the region in November, to Yonkers, to campaign on behalf of Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York Democratic ticket ahead of the election. Biden also came to the Hudson Valley in October, including a visit to a Poughkeepsie IBM facility that’s a hub for mainframe development and quantum computing. The visit included an an announcement of an IBM program that includes a $20 billion investment across locations in Poughkeepsie, Yorktown and Albany in research and development, semiconductor manufacturing, mainframe technology, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. He also visited Syracuse in October, discussing a hopeful vision for the technology-oriented future of U.S. manufacturing.
The president and House Republicans have been at an impasse in negotiations.
Responding to reports of Biden’s Hudson Valley visit, U.S. Rep Marc Molinaro, a Republican whose 19th District includes Sullivan and Ulster counties, said in a statement the president can support the House-passed legislation last month that had a debt ceiling lift “or engage in good-faith, bipartisan negotiations to find common ground to avoid a default and bend the unsustainable rate of federal spending. So far, he has done neither. Instead, President Biden plans to leave negotiators behind in Washington and travel to the Hudson Valley to make a political speech.”
