Tioga Central senior Emily Sindoni was recently named New York’s recipient of the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award, as revealed by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
The award is named in honor of a four-time World Champion and women’s wrestling pioneer. Saunders was the first woman to be inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, in 2006, and was inducted into the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011.
Sindoni in late-January topped the 132-pound weight class in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Invitational at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. In that competition, she pinned all of her four opponents.
Last May, Sindoni won the 120-pound title at the National High School Coaches Association Nationals in Virginia Beach.
