ORCHARD PARK – One more dress rehearsal to get through, and in a somewhat surprising development, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott said Thursday that Josh Allen and the starters will be playing as they close the preseason against the Chicago Bears Saturday at Soldier Field.
“Yeah, it’s just what I feel like is best for the team right now,” McDermott said. “And every preseason is a little bit different based on where guys are and where the team is. And so they’re going to play this week and I feel like it’s best for for where we’re at right now.”
Allen and the starters played at least three series last week in the loss to the Steelers, some even beyond that, but traditionally the final preseason game is reserved for the back end of the roster as players battle to win the final few spots. Not so this summer.
Most interesting in this game – aside from hoping the Bills avoid injuries – will be to see what the rotations are at right guard (O’Cyrus Torrence and Ryan Bates), middle linebacker (Tyrel Dodson and A.J. Klein), and cornerback (Dane Jackson, Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford). We may get an indication of what the coaching staff is thinking based on the usage in this game.

At quarterback, Allen will probably play up to a quarter, and then Kyle Allen is likely finishing the game because Matt Barkley suffered an elbow injury in Pittsburgh and didn’t practice all week. Playing Kyle Allen isn’t a bad thing because he needs the reps.
Thus far in two appearances Allen has played 53 snaps and has completed 20 of 30 passes for 234 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
