The New York Yankees are in a rough spot. After a solid first half, they have lost five of six coming out of the All-Star Break. The team has tied a season-high with four straight losses that includes a sweep at the hands of the Mike theTrout-less Los Angeles Angels.
The Yankees (50-47, last in AL East) return home for a five-game homestand against the lowly Kansas City Royals (28-70, last in AL Central) for a three-game series followed by a Subway Series rematch with a two-game set against the New York Mets in the Bronx.
The Yankees will have Clarke Schmidt on the bump for the series opener. After a tough start to the regular season, the 27-year-old has found his groove. He’s allowed three or fewer runs in 11 straight starts dating back to May 19. Schmidt tied a season-high with eight strikeouts across six innings as he earned his fifth victory of the year in a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on July 15.
Kansas City is sending Alec Marsh to the mound. The rookie right-hander has only made three starts in the big league this season. Despite earning a loss in all three appearances, Marsh had his best outing in his most recent start as he struck out a career-high 11 hitters and only surrendered two runs in six innings versus the Tampa Bay Rays last Saturday.
