The City of Buffalo’s nine emergency warming shelters for use during major weather events are not yet equipped with cots, blankets, water or food, and one of them doesn’t have a generator, administration officials said.
The city is working with the state’s Department of Homeland Security to acquire the supplies, Mayor Byron W. Brown said Wednesday.

The fact that the nine sites are not stocked with supplies is concerning to some members of the Common Council.
“Here we are at the end of November, and we don’t have those supplies. The lack of preparedness and insight are very troubling,” University Common Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt said. “And I don’t think they have a sense of urgency and see what residents see and their concerns.”
The emergency warming centers are part of the city’s new plan for responding to an extreme winter storm – such as the deadly blizzard that claimed 47 lives in the region over Christmas weekend.
