With winter fast approaching, the City of Buffalo says it is close to hiring an emergency services manager, 10 months after a blizzard killed 47 residents of Erie and Niagara counties.
Some Buffalo Council members said Tuesday that job should have been filled months ago. But Mayor Byron Brown says the delay won’t have any adverse impact on the city’s preparedness as it gets ready for the wild winter weather that is sure to come.
At least 40 people have died in Erie and Niagara counties due to the blizzard that paralyzed the city of Buffalo for six days.
The city says it is close to making an offer to someone to fill the position of emergency services manager.
“I just got information from Council staff that the administration is looking to make an offer to someone on this, so I’m so glad to hear it,” said Common Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt on Tuesday morning during the Council’s Finance Committee meeting, which he chaired.
City spokesman Michael DeGeorge confirmed Tuesday “the administration is making progress on the emergency manager position.”
Wyatt questioned whether the new emergency manager will be up to speed and able to hit the ground running by the time the snow starts falling.
