More than 600 asylum-seekers were bused from New York to the Buffalo region in the summer of 2023, generating immense controversy and headlines after being housed in area hotels. But now, it appears that many of them are going to be taking the bus back to the Big Apple by the end of the year.
The region’s many refugee resettlement agencies came together to welcome, care for and support the asylum-seekers. Soon, those who remain in the hotels will have the opportunity to move into housing in the community.ย
A representative with DocGo, the vendor responsible for providing transportation and other support services to the migrants bused to Cheektowaga hotels in June and July, stated Friday that “based on direction from the city,” those who have not transitioned to other housing programs will be “reconnected with friends and family with the City of New York covering the cost of travel; or returned to the Arrival Center in New York City.”
It is unclear exactly how many asylum-seekers in Western New York will be affected, but hundreds were still staying in area hotels as of three months ago.ย
