Nirit Weiner is in Buffalo, but her heart and all of her attention are solidly in Israel.
An app on her phone allows her to see what is happening in the apartment building she keeps in Hadera, south of Haifa in Israel. When sirens sound, she knows residents there have 50 seconds to take shelter in a safe room.
Her family, including her parents and cousins, are in Tel Aviv. She tries uplifting their spirits by constantly communicating with them and showing pictures of kittens to her cousin’s young children, who are already horrified by what is happening outside. The oldest daughter is 8. Stressed, she has started wetting the bed, Weiner said.
After three days stuck in Tel Aviv, the family made it out on a flight Monday morning to Dubai and were hoping to head back to Buffalo, Steven Cohen said.
“We listen to them cry and sometimes cry with them,” said Weiner, 62, a retired teacher. “That’s the only thing we can do.”
