BURA to spend $2M on repairs to hostel complex; hostel gets one more chance to buy it

The hostel complex in downtown Buffalo will get a $2 million renovation – and the nonprofit group that runs the hostel is getting one more opportunity over the next year to raise enough money to buy and redevelop the city-owned complex as its long-term home.

The Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency voted Thursday to spend up to $2 million on critical structural repairs to the downtown building behind the the Hostel Buffalo Niagara on Main Street. That will require the hostel to move out, beginning around March 2024. Construction is expected to take about six months.

Buffalo’s only official hostel for backpackers and budget travelers is in danger of being kicked out of its Main Street home of nearly 30 years because of the deteriorating condition of the downtown building.

The unanimous decision by the agency’s board is designed to address major “health and safety” issues that were identified in recent months by city inspectors and engineers from DiDonato Associates.

Those “hazardous” conditions threatened the stability of the rear structure at 664 Washington St., which has been vacant for decades, and posed a risk to occupants in the hostel building, located at 667 Main, the engineers said.
