A group of cloistered Carmelite nuns has acknowledged in a letter that they will move from their large monastery in Buffalo and relocate to St. Augustine, Fla.ย
“It is with both sadness and joy that we announce that, after a century of blessings here in Buffalo, we have received permission from Rome to relocate to the Diocese of St. Augustine in north Florida,” the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Buffalo said in a letter that was read at a Mass at the monastery on Oct. 8.ย
The nuns intend to put their monastery, with a listed address of 75 Carmel Road, up for sale, and move to St. Augustine, according to a Buffalo Diocese source and a woman who raises money for the Carmelites in Florida.
The letter was published Monday on the nuns’ websiteย shortly after The Buffalo News published a story that said the Carmelite nuns may move to St. Augustine. ย ย
The nuns have resided since the 1920s in a two-story brick building called Monastery of the Little Flower of Jesus that stretches along Carmel Road and Tacoma Avenue in North Buffalo.ย
“When this monastery was built, this was a quiet area on the outskirts of the city,” the letter said. “Now, however, we no longer have the silence and solitude which are requisite for a Cloistered community,” the letter said.
