Jason Kelce charmed the nation when he frolicked shirtless at Highmark Stadium as the Bills lost that heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs. But Kelce wasn’t the first famous heavyweight to beguile Bills fans in front of the cameras. That would be Matty Matheson, who once did his crazed cooking show for Vice TV among the hardcore tailgaters of Hammer’s Lot.
Matheson is a celebrity chef who grew up in Fort Erie, Ont., rooting for the Bills. He stole the show at the recent 75th Annual Emmy Awards with an ode to restaurant workers that was interrupted by an extended kiss from a co-star – a performance audacious enough to make a Kelce blush.
Matheson’s first job in the dining biz came at Southsides Patio Bar and Grill, with a view of Buffalo across the Niagara River. Later he made his name at several eateries in Toronto and, eventually, on his Vice cooking show. Then, during the pandemic, he and his wife, Trish, moved back to Fort Erie to raise their kids.
Matheson’s manic energy is one of the animating forces of “The Bear,” the FX/Hulu series that won an Emmy for best comedy series. He was originally hired for the show as a food consultant to school the actors on how to look like real chefs. Soon enough, though, he was cast as Neil Fak, a Mr. Fixit character. Now he is a co-producer, which is how he came to accept the Emmy as the show’s ensemble gathered behind him at LA’s Peacock Theater.
