Five Buffalo fire stations will hold open houses in October in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, Mayor Byron W. Brown announced.
During the sessions, youngsters will be able to climb aboard fire trucks and firefighters will answer questions from visitors. Free smoke detectors, coloring books and safety tips will be given out.
Theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you.” The announcement noted that smoke alarms dramatically reduce the risk of dying in a fire at home.
“We want to encourage city residents to not only test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in October, but test them every single month,” Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said in the announcement.
The first open house will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 1 at Engine 4 at 939 Abbott Road and Hollywood Avenue.
Four more open houses will be held on Oct. 5. They include Engine 37 at 500 Rhode Island St., from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; Engine 36 at 860 Hertel Ave., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Engine 21 at 1229 Jefferson Ave., from noon to 1:30 p.m.; and Engine 23 at 3226 Bailey Ave., from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
