A majority of autoworkers at General Motors’ Town of Tonawanda engine plant voted against a tentative labor agreement with GM, as balloting continues across United Auto Workers locals.
According to an Automotive News vote tracker, 57% of the 644 ballots cast Monday by UAW Local 774 members were against the deal. The tally was 369 against vs. 275 in favor, according to Automotive News.
Automotive News’ vote tracker shows that across the country, 52% of UAW members have voted in favor of the GM deal so far, with more votes yet to be reported.ย The UAW represents about 46,000 workers at GM facilities.
Members of UAW Local 686 at GM’s Lockport components plant are scheduled to vote Wednesday.ย
UAW Local 774 represents 753 workers at the Tonawanda engine plant. As part of the tentative agreement, GM has pledged to invest $300 million in the site for drive-unit production to support electric vehicles.
At Ford, members of Local 897, representing workers at the Hamburg stamping plant, voted in favor of the UAW’s deal with Ford. The Automotive News vote tracker shows 65% of UAW members at Ford nationally have backed the deal, with more results yet to come.
The last time UAW workers voted on contracts with the Detroit Three, in 2019, members of UAW 774 voted against the tentative deal with GM. That deal was ratified nationally.
