GOP to mount challenge for Burke’s Assembly seat

At least two Republican candidates plan to challenge Assembly Member Patrick B. Burke later this year. 

Political newcomer Joseph P. Flatley of South Buffalo and Sandra Magnano of West Seneca plan to challenge Burke, a Democrat from Orchard Park, for the 142nd District seat, Erie County Republican Chairman Michael Kracker told The Buffalo News. 

Flatley, 23, has worked for the Erie County Board of Elections and in freight and receiving at Home Depot in Hamburg.

“I’m a blue collar worker through and through,” Flatley said.

Flatley said he wants to trim the bureaucracy of state government. He said recent accusations of workplace harassment against Burke by former staffers – Burke denies the accusations  have been a distraction.

“It’s a burden on the taxpayers. It’s a burden on the constituents,” Flatley said. “He doesn’t seem like he focuses on the issues that matter to this district.”

The lawsuit was filed in State Supreme Court in Erie County by attorney Nate McMurray on behalf of Matthew Dearing and Nicole Golias who accuse Burke of discriminating against them based on race and gender and their outside political activities.

Burke stated that an Assembly investigation cleared him of wrongdoing, and that he has focused on bipartisan issues…
