Hochul announces new AI consortium; UB hopes to be its hub

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the creation of a new AI consortium Monday that aims to secure New York’s place at the forefront of the artificial intelligence industry โ€“ and the University at Buffalo stands a chance to be the site of the new partnership dubbed Empire AI.

Hochulโ€™s office released the announcement ahead of her 2024 State of the State address Tuesday in Albany.

A team of UB researchers is working to develop AI tools to help the nation’s short supply of speech language pathologists provide more individualized interventions for millions of children who need more speech-language services than they are getting in school.

The new consortium will launch a state-of-the-art AI computing center in upstate New York to be used by the stateโ€™s leading institutions to promote responsible research and development, create AI jobs and โ€œunlock AI opportunities for the public good,” Hochul said.

Empire AI will include seven founding institutions โ€“ Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the State University of New York, the City University of New York (CUNY), and the Simons Foundation.

โ€œThe University of Buffalo is under consideration as a potential site,โ€ the announcement said.
