Hochul orders flags at half-staff in honor of fallen Genesee County Sheriff deputy

Gov. Kathy Hochul directed flags on all state buildings be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday in honor of a Genesee County Sheriff’s deputy who died after a struggle broke out during an arrest at Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel.

Sgt. Thomas A. Sanfratello, 54, who died Sunday, was a 32-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office. Sanfratello also served on the Alexander Town Board in Genesee County.

“From the Town Board to the Sheriffโ€™s Office, Sergeant Thomas A. Sanfratello dedicated his life to improving the lives of his neighbors and protecting his community,”ย  Hochul said in a statement Friday.

“My heart goes out to Sergeant Sanfratelloโ€™s family and loved ones. May the courage he showed throughout a lifetime of service be a comfort to those he leaves behind,” she added.

Two Batavia residents were charged in connection with Sanfratello’s death.

Michael J. Elmore, 33, was arraigned Tuesday and charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault on a police officer and second-degree burglary.

Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, 39, was charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree attempted assault.

Sanfratello’s funeral procession will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, led by Sheriff William A. Sheron Jr. and Undersheriff Bradley D. Mazur, from Assemblyman R. Stephen Hawley Drive north of Batavia to St. Joseph Cemetery in Batavia, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said. The service at the cemetery is private for members of the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement.ย ย
