Kimberly Beaty is leaving her post as public safety director at Canisius University to become the next chief of police for the University at Buffalo Police Department.
In an email to university employees, Laura Hubbard, vice president for finance and administration at UB, said Beaty was selected for the position after a national search and will begin her duties Nov. 16.
“In this important role, Beaty is responsible for providing leadership to the University Police Department and making strategic judgments and decisions in charting the universityโs law enforcement, safety and security plan,” said Hubbard.
Beaty “is responsible for evaluating and continually refining the departmentโs different strategies to engage the campus community. And she will serve to ensure a relationship-based approach to community policing to effectively connect the police with students, faculty, staff, and other community partners,” Hubbard added.
She will command a force of 39 officers, along with nine lieutenants, four investigators, five administrators, nine civilian dispatchers and six staff members for a department total of 72 employees, according to John Della Contrada, vice president for communications at UB.
She succeeds Chris Bartolomei, who retired in August after serving UB and University Police for 27 years โ the last six as chief.
Della Contrada said Beaty’s annual salary will be $190,000, which is nationally competitive among university police chiefs.
Beaty has been serving since 2018 as director of public safety at Canisius, where she is credited with having developed anย Inclusive Crisis Response Team for activation, on-scene response, intervention and post-crisis review.
Prior to that,ย Beaty rose from a patrol officer to deputy commissioner before retiring from the Buffalo Police Department after 32 years of service.
