Lyceum apartments to provide affordable housing for domestic violence survivors

The construction of what is believed to be the first permanent affordable and supportive housing complex in Erie County for survivors of domestic violence is now almost complete.

Following three years of planning, Community Services for Every1 partnered with Edgemere Development for historic preservation and adaptive transformation of the former Catholic school and community center, known as St. John Kanty Lyceum, into the Apartments at the Lyceum in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.

Applicants who want to reside in one of the 42 apartments, including 12 dedicated exclusively to domestic violence survivors, are now being screened.

Incidents of domestic violence have been growing in New York, according to state data. An analysis from the office of State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli found an 8.5% increase in New York City and an 8.7% increase in the rest of the state.

โ€œRight now, we are serving 25 people (per month) in our transitional housing alone,” saidย Mindy Cervoni, CEO of Community Services for Every1. “We had so many applications for this housing at the Lyceum that alone shows the need for services to stay.โ€

The Lyceumโ€™s initial address had been 97 Swinburne St. However, the organization purchased 10 adjacent, vacant lots along Swinburne to create off-street parking and green space that features gardens and a playground for the tenants and their families to use, said Kelly Kinderman, vice president of program support and development at Community Services.ย 

The development will have 30 one-bedroom apartments, 11 two-bedroom apartments and one studio. Five apartments are accessible for anyone with mobility issues and three are for those with hearing or visual impairments. Depending on the monthly income and household size, rents may go as low as $618.
