Whether University at Buffalo medical residents were going on strike Tuesday was still up in the air Monday afternoon, with union officials saying they were still waiting for management’s response to their proposal.
If the response fell short of the union’s demands for better salaries, health care and working conditions, 829 residents were planning not to report to work at 10 UB-affiliated hospitals and clinics. The strike is planned to last four days.
“The employer is concerned about the strike, so the ice is breaking,” Dr. Stuart Bussey, president of the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, told The News Monday morning. “If they are smart they will avoid four days of embarrassment. But if we don’t have a deal today, we are going on strike.”
Affected hospitals and clinics would include Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Buffalo Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Erie County Medical Center, Sisters of Charity Hospital, Buffalo Psychiatric Center, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Olean General Hospital, Buffalo General Hospital, Gates Vascular Institute, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Jericho Road Community Health Center and University at Buffalo Neurosurgery Clinic.
