If you missed out on acquiring a pair of eclipse viewing glasses in preparation for the total solar eclipse that will pass over Western New York on April 8, thereโs more on the way.
The Buffalo Museum of Science has announced that the remainder of the 300,000 pairs it ordered with $100,000 in funding from Erie County will soon be doled out to all 37 branches of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.
The glasses were received by the museum earlier this week from Rainbow Symphony, which is recognized by the American Astronomical Societyโs Solar Eclipse Task Force as a reputable supplier of safe solar viewers/filters, and is working with the libraries to distribute them across the county. The first distribution of glasses in mid-October was picked up from libraries much faster than anticipated, and supplies ran out within weeks.
Museum officials warn that looking directly at the sun with the naked eye during the eclipse could lead to vision damage or even blindness, so securing eclipse viewing glasses from a reputable source is critical for eye safety. Officials also recommend storing the glasses in a safe location and checking them for damage in advance of using them.
There is a limit of two glasses per person. Patrons are advised to call their local library branch first to confirm the glasses are available.
