Motion Project to host Valentine’s event for those with special needs and caregivers

The Motion Project Foundation will host a Valentine’s Day-related event for those challenged by a disability and for caregivers from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 at the foundation’s headquarters, 4820 Genesee St., Cheektowaga.

The free event, “Wheel You Be My Valentine?” is the first of its kind, according to Mary Lynn Barnhard, foundation vice president.

“It’s actually for (the foundation’s) clients or anyone that has any type of disability,” Barnhard said. “It’s a time for them to socialize and have fun. It’s just a short period of time, but we also want it to be a support for caregivers.”

The Motion Project Foundation operates a 6,000-square-foot gym for those with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities. It was started by Barnhard’s daughter, Natalie, a physical therapy assistant and licensed massage therapist, with the proceeds of a legal settlement she won against an exercise equipment manufacturer that made a piece of equipment that tipped, fell on her and paralyzed her from the neck down in 2004.ย ย

Mary Lynn Barnhard said one section of the facility will be open to their clients and others with disabilities, and will feature refreshments, games and other activities for them. Another part of the facility will be dedicated to caregivers, who will be similarly feted and simultaneously pampered. Organizers hope to provide them with relaxing chair massages.

“There’s such a need, especially for caregivers, because there’s a big percentage that suffer from depression and from burnout,” she said.ย  ย
