‘My son chose to be the person he was’: Mother mourns Sewer Authority worker killed on 190

A little over an hour before Keyshawn N. Gault was fatally shot last month while riding in a Buffalo Sewer Authority pickup truck on the I-190, he texted his mother a selfie from the vehicle.

He had on a winter beanie, underneath a bright yellow hoodie. He gave coy smile.

โ€œCool dude,โ€ Angel Dubose texted back to him. He responded with two emoji faces: a smirk and a blushing smile.

Dubose then dozed off. A while later, she awoke to the devastating news that her son โ€“ her only child โ€“ was gone.

โ€œMy baby did what he was supposed to do โ€“ he went to work,โ€ Dubose said in a phone interview. โ€œ… And here we are.โ€

He was laid to rest on Saturday after a funeral at Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church on Masten Avenue, where he previously worked at the churchโ€™s First Fruits Food Pantry. Mayor Byron W. Brown declared Nov. 4 โ€œKeyshawn Gault Day,โ€ and a procession of Buffalo Sewer Authority vehicles paid tribute to the young worker.

Gault was one of three Sewer Authority workers shot as they drove to lunch about 11:20 a.m. Oct. 26. They were southbound on Interstate 190 and had just passed the Peace Bridge when someone in a black 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up next to their work pickup and opened fire multiple times, according to police.

At the wheel was Myron L. Walker, 30. Lamar T. Whitfield Jr., 23, was a passenger in the back seat. Gault was in the front passenger seat, where he appeared to be in the selfie he had recently sent his mom.

Walker and Whitfield were wounded and taken to Erie County Medical Center. Gault was pronounced dead at the scene.
