Narcotics investigation leads to Buffalo man’s arrest, removal of 7 dogs

A Buffalo man arrested Wednesday on narcotics charges had seven dogs removed from his residence, and three of the dogs had been left outside without shelter, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

Amos Dean, 67, was charged with four felonies – three drug charges and a weapons possession charge – and three misdemeanors. The charge of appropriate shelter for dogs left outdoors is considered a violation. This followed a lengthy investigation led by the Sheriff’s Narcotics and Intelligence Unit.

Over a half-kilogram of cocaine, packaging materials and digital scales were recovered during a search of Dean’s residence, the Sheriff’s Office said. The search of a vehicle parked in Dean’s driveway uncovered a large amount of crack cocaine, cutting agents and a loaded handgun, the Sheriff’s Office added. Dean was reportedly taken into custody a short distance away after leaving his residence in another vehicle.

Buffalo Animal Control Officers assisted with the removal of seven pit bulls from Dean’s residence, including the three found outside on the 30-degree day, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Dean was arraigned Thursday morning in Buffalo City Court on three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies, three counts of criminally using drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanors, and the appropriate shelter for dogs left outdoors charge. He was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.
