New York Landmark Conservancy awards Sacred Sites grants in Falls, Buffalo

Two notable religious properties in Western New York are among 17 across the state that are receiving Sacred Sites grants from the New York Landmark Conservancy.

The First Presbyterian Church of Niagara Falls has been granted $45,000 to assist in restoring the bell tower and turret on its building, the conservancy announced in a press release.

The Gothic Revival-Romanesque Revival church on First Street in downtown Niagara Falls was built in 1849 from locally-quarried granite and was expanded twice in the 19th century.

Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo has been awarded $25,000 to help restore the exterior masonry on its synagogue on Delaware Avenue.

One of the city’s foremost examples of mid-20th century modern architecture, it was designed in 1964 by Max Abramowitz and includes windows and other artwork by Ben Shahn.
