The national accolades for Western New York are piling up.
In the same week Reader’s Digest crowned Buffalo the nicest place in America, North Tonawanda City Market has been voted the best farmers market in the United States.
Out of the 2,000 participants, North Tonawanda City Market received 18,326 votes, earning the honor of being the “People’s Choice”-winning farmers market in the 15th annual American Farmers Market Celebration (AFMC) organized by the American Farmland Trust-Farmers Market Coalition.
Established in 1908, the yearlong North Tonawanda City Market has 146 stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, flowers, cheese, sausages and more.
“Our market is over a century old and has always been a special place where our wonderful farmers and vendors can come and present their products,” North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec said in a news release.
Located at the corner of Payne Avenue and Robinson Street, the market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Tylec credited the market’s manager, Chris Delprince, and his relentless efforts to “maximize exposure” for facilitating the win.
“From the farmers, vendors, media, community, businesses and people both young and old, everyone was all on board,” Delprince said in the release following the win. “It was such a beautiful thing to see how people came together to support our market.”
In 2022, North Tonawanda City Market finished second in New York State and ranked as the 13th-best market in the country.
Delprince was appointed market manager in January 2022. Since then, he has added 30 new vendors to the existing roster of 60, with the vendors making a 25% increase in revenue, he told The Buffalo News on Friday.
