Peak week: Foliage statewide is at or near peak – and you can enjoy them in sleeves

This may be the last best week to see the fall colors in New York.

While foliage color is past its peak in much of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties, as well as the Adirondacks, it hits peak this week in Niagara County and Central New York, including the Finger Lakes, according to the I Love New York Fall Foliage Report.

Despite what it says on the calendar, those who look to enjoy the view outdoors will be able to do so in shorts and T-shirts on same days if they choose. High temperatures will climb toward the low 70s by Wednesday and Thursday, and near 70 on Friday.

“It’s going to be a nice week to see the leaves that are left,” said Aaron Reynolds, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

“We went through a dry spell, which really brought out the colors,” Reynolds said.

Leaves turn from green to yellow, orange and red with the change in the season, which brings shorter days and longer nights.

“As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical processes in the leaf begin to paint the landscape with Nature’s autumn palette,” according to the National Forest Service.

The production of chlorophyll slows and stops, and the chlorophyll, which keeps leaves green, is destroyed, allowing leaves to unfurl more vibrant pigments.
