Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve soon will be able to fulfill top request of visitors: real restrooms.
Erie County gave the Hamburg Natural History Society, which operates the fossil park, a grant totaling $827,000 to construct a permanent bathroom facility.
“It will take care of the No. 1 concern of our visitors by offering them a place to take care of No. 1 and No. 2,” Executive Director Phil Stokes said in an email, adding that the grant is the park’s largest single gift.
The funding will be used at the Jeffrey Boulevard side of the park, where a new entrance and parking area will be located.
James Hanna and Jonathan Hoag have been picking up rocks at Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve in Hamburg since they were kids. And now, in their 20s, they have found two rare fossils of an animal that had never been found here.
Site work was completed in December with donations from Local 17, International Union of Operating Engineers, Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District, Marrano Homes and Lardon Construction, according to Stokes.
