Quick bridge fix lets Thruway reopen sooner than expected in Chautauqua County

Repairs to a damaged bridge went faster than expected and traffic returned to normal Saturday morning three hours sooner than scheduled on the eastbound Thruway in Chautauqua County, the New York Thruway Authority reported.

The eastbound lanes were reopened at 4 a.m., the report said, after a damaged girder on the North Road overpass was removed and other work to stabilize the bridge was completed.

The closing began at 5 p.m. Friday and eastbound traffic was detoured for 18 miles from Exit 60 to Exit 59 by way of Route 20 through downtown Westfield and Fredonia. Westbound lanes were not affected.

A Thruway Authority spokesman said earlier that the bridge at milepost 473.78 had been struck twice by tractor-trailer trucks that were too tall to pass under the bridge last Monday and Tuesday. State police issued tickets to the drivers. Another truck struck the bridge earlier this year.
